This same thing happened last year and I can't recall how I solved it. I have an sbcglobal.net email address and I customized a homepage. I also customzed an Awesome Start Google page with 8 different links to frequently visited websites. I also have passwords and logins saved for places such as live journal, facebook and twitter. Now, all of a sudden each time I open my browser, the homepage is a generic ATT page and I have to log in to get my mail - which didn't work over and over because ATT kept telling me my username or password was wrong, which it wasn't. I called them and they showed me how to reset a password and at first it worked, but then it happened again. Anyway, my internet provider is Comcast, so ATT can't really help all that much since I don't have an official account with them. Also, now each time I open the browser, the Awesome start page is back to defaults with none of my links. Also, I have to relogin to facebook, twitter, etc. I don't really use the feature from Firefox where they ask if I want the password saved, so that's not an issue. I do have Roboform and use that. Anyway, could you please tell me how to repair these problems, perhaps something to do with the profile folder - which I did try to find using the instructions, but it looked different than on your page. Help!

Hi Cyndyls,

You should take a look at the Usernames and passwords are not saved Knowledge Base article. There is a lot of good info in there.

Is it just your passwords and logins that aren't being remembered? If it clears out everything (history, cookies, etc) you should look at this article.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks, I'll take a look at that article, although I suspect I read it already ;-) I think it may be cookies as well since the customized homepage disappears, but I am not really certain since I don't know what else is in cookies. The history isn't being cleaned out though. It's so frustrating since sometimes it won't even let me log in to get my mail thru my user name and pw when I know it is correct.

Try the steps in those articles and if that doesn't work, you could try starting Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide and the Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems article as well.

You could also try Creating a new profile.

Please update Firefox to the latest version via "Help > About Firefox" or "Help > Check for Updates"
The Firefox Firefox 3.0.1 version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates.
You may have a user agent that is corrupted and that identifies you as Firefox 3.0.1

See:

That issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that aren't kept.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Websites remembering you and automatically log you in is stored in a cookie.

  • Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

Do not use "Clear Recent History" to clear the "Cookies" and the "Site Preferences"

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! I did try all of the stuff regarding cookie exceptions- I put in the pages that were going back to default, etc., But no go. Still didn't work. I just opened the browser again a few minutes ago and boom- same generic ATT page, not my homepage. Had to log in to twitter, fb, lj, redo the awesome start page. I think my computer is doomed ;-) I haven't updated my Firefox, mostly because I fear even more problems, but I guess it can't get much worse, unless updating causes me to lose all my bookmarks!

If clearing the cookies doesn't help then it is possible that the file cookies.sqlite that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox Profile Folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
