Tried clearing 'download history' to fix hanging, but then it hangs
Running 6.0 on Vista. Firefox was hanging, so tried all the debug options on Mozilla website. Seemed to be a DownloadHistory issue, but when I try to clear the history, Firefox hangs again, every time.

Try to delete the file downloads.sqlite in the Profile Folder

Tried that. Now I get an error similar to this one: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/792258?s=sanitize+bug&as=s
That is usually a problem with using Clear Recent History to clear the cookies.
Firefox tries to clear the cookies created by plugins as well by opening a plugin-container process for each and waiting for a response. If that takes too much time then you get that error.
