OCX file are ActiveX controls for IE and won't work with other browsers like Firefox.

If that software doesn't support Firefox then you are out of luck and you can try an extension in Firefox that uses IE.

Hi :)

Nice try but not much help....

First link is for Chrome not FF...

Second link doesnt work in FF4.0

Third works but only opens IE8 , which I can manage perfectly well lol :)

Fourth, same as third....

I cannot believe that FF wont work with probably the most popular security remote software in the UK.... there must be thousands of people using it and NOT being able to use FF with it :(

All the best Brett :)

Hi :)

Still no helpful answers to this problem ???

If that security software uses ActiveX, it ain't gonna work in any browser except for IE or one of its' clones. Have you contacted your vendor and asked them about this issue and how they expect it to work in Firefox? It would be up to them to provide the "plugin" that is missing when they use ActiveX.

Hi :)

I am not totally sure about your answer...

.ocx files are all registered in the Registry (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit) for this Security program, and they work with IE but not with FF 4.

Now that does not seem to be a windows or program problem, it seems to me to be FF problem....

Are you saying that no OLE type controls like .ocx will EVER work in FF ?

And if not why not ?

All the best Brett :)

See if this helps you understand why ActiveX doesn't and probably will never work in Firefox.

Hi :)

I do understand how ActiveX works...

Those pages say....

" ActiveX is only available on Windows operating systems, and as a result webpages that require it will not work on Linux or Mac.

ActiveX integration with the Windows operating system has made it a target for malicious software.

Firefox uses plugins to view and use multimedia content embedded in web pages, and extensions to add new functions. "

Ok...so WHERE is the Firefox plugin for this particular control ?

And please do not say ask the manufacturer...they ALREADY supply software that WILL work in IE..... Its FF who SHOULD be supplying the plugin that would enable this control to work....

All the best, Brett :)

That company decided to build their software around ActiveX controls, which only allows that software to work in IE and its' clones. They need to come up with the plugin for their product to work in Firefox and other browsers who don't do ActiveX, but rather use the NPAPI plugin system.

You are entitled to your opinion as to who is at fault, but the fact of the matter is that your DVR software is faulty (IMHO) by not offering an alternative plugin for users who don't or can't use IE.

Hi :)

I am sorry but blind loyalty to FF doesnt cut it here...

Personally I love FF and use it whenever possible, and I WOULD use it for everything IF its plugins allowed all software that works in IE to work in FF....

The company that wrote that security software made sure it works in IE, the fact it does not work in FF is due to the lack of a workable plugin for FF...

We are not talking about some weird web game not working we are talking about a major piece of business remote security software.

The DVR software is NOT faulty...it DOES work in IE...and from my viewpoint its down to FF to fix that....

On a side note for the last several weeks I have been reading most of the questions and answers here and unfortunately there seems to be an unwarranted bias towards FF here...

To the people who answer here, who I assume do not work for Mozilla, they should realise that its a lot more honest to just say....FF wont do that, or maybe it will be fixed in future, rather than ALWAYS blaming external companies....as an example...the Norton Toolbar question that comes up with monotonous regularity...why oh why didnt FF talk to Norton BEFORE the release of version 4 ?

All the best Brett :)

I am entitled to my opinions about anything, just as you are. As far as "blind loyalty" to Firefox or Mozilla, that is just plain wrong; when I think Mozilla is wrong I criticize them here and at MozillaZine as strongly or even stronger than most other users do - except that I am usually right when I do so.

And as far as "bias" toward Firefox or "bias" against other software companies, I call it as I see it. Firefox works fine without the DVR software, if that company chooses not to support the 2nd most popular browser in use today (and probably doesn't support the 3rd, 4th, and 5th most popular browsers) that is their loss in customer goodwill.

I am sorry that you can't see where your thought process about where the responsibility lies is wrong, and hope that you aren't selling that software to your customers.

Hi :)

I am sorry but its your thought processes that are incorrect....

Look at it this way... as an independant person would....

We have a piece of software..lets call it "X"

The company that makes X , make sure it will work in the main browser of the day...

Along comes along a new browser that says it is better than the other browser..

But X wont work in it and nor will a fair few other bits of software (Norton Toolbar plus other toolbars as an example)

Now the other browser maker (Mozilla) could quite justifiably say, well we didnt know about X (even though it MUST have been logged as a problem during the Beta testing)

BUT... it CERTAINLY did know about Norton and all the other major toolbars that now do NOT work in version 4 :(

Not allowing those to work is not just bad, its downright lazy....have you seen the HUGE number of threads that are asking about going back to 3.6 from 4 ??

Incidentally, my company does not sell security systems or their software, but if we did and someone asked why the software would not work in FF, I would answer honestly..... FF software writers were too lazy to make sure that ALL plugins and toolbars that PREVIOUSLY worked would work in the new version 4, and as an educated guess, the fact that IE 9 appeared , forced them to release version 4 (finished or unfinished) so they didnt seem to be running an old version whilst MS was crowing about IE9 (Which is awful in my humble opinion)

All the best, Brett

The longer this thread continues, the more ancillary comments you throw in that aren't directly pertinent to your problem with your DVR software not working with Firefox 4.0. Sorry, I don't intend to continue with this discussion.

I do agree that something needs to be done better with regards to plugins for Firefox, but I do disagree with you as to whose responsibility that something is.

Hi :)

You dont have to continue posting answers here....that is your right...

I think the ordinary readers of this thread, 21 of whom have THE SAME PROBLEM , will draw their own conclusions as to whose fault it is...

To those people reading this, will the DVR .OCX problem ever be fixed, actually I expect it will be, and by Mozilla... and not by the company that makes the software...

I am sure it will take a while though, and in the meantime, that software DOES work in IE8 but NOT IE9...

All the best, Brett :)

Hi This is obviously a big problem which, instead of the big players attempting to solve it, they are arguing amongst themselves like typical politicians. I have the same problem with my £850 DVR which uses .ocx. Don't argue ------ somebody please solve it. Chris

more options

I agree with Brett...

We are not talking about only that software.

The Thing is ALL the ActiveX files which use .ocx will not work on FF and will work on IE. Well this is clearly a disadvantage for FF users. And it becomes the responsibility of ppl who claim FF to be the best to solve the issue for the users who trust them :)

I do not intent to offend anyone here. I am submitting my opinion.

I too have the same problem but not i have recently updated to IE9 on my windows 7 machine and dont know how to roll back to older version of the same. Ankur

more options

Hi Ankur :)

If you uninstall IE9 it automatically puts it back to IE8....which DOES work with .ocx files unlike any version of Firefox.....unfortunately :(

I decided to try the IE tab for FF and it seemed to work for me. When I first tried FF with my security dvr I had same issues as everyone else did. When installing this IE tab for FF drag it to the toolbar next to the URL address bar. Before going to your DVR URL click the new IE tab and click "Switch Rendering Engine" and you should be good to go. It worked fine for the first time with my week old brand new DVR, so I assume it will with many others older then mine. The link to this is here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ie-tab-plus-ff-36/

Hi all. Mine is a bit larger discussion... The company who make this piece of software X also made Y, a binary client for their DVR. Y is addressed for people who doesn't use or doesn't want to use internet explorer as client. Unfortunately this client's binaries are released only for Windows platform.

So my question is: is Linux a faulty operating system because it doesn't support Windows binaries? Or the lack is from the company itself, who doesn't care about standard and interoperability and release their software only for a restricted group of people??

Greetings

I would have to blame both sides, sad that there is nothing being done about this. I found what most would consider an unreasonable workaround for at least viewing your cameras. You still need to either be on the dvr to set everything up, or a windows machine for settings. I have a zmodo H9104V dvr. I set up the android emulator on all my linux machines and installed asee software on the virtual androids. It is a process and you can only view one camera at a time. It is just like having a droid on your desktop. I can cycle through all the cameras and view them remotely through port forwarding. If anyone is interested I can do a step-by-step. It doesn't solve the firefox issue but it does resolve being able to see your cams from a linux machine. May work on apple too, but I never tried it.

To All the Whingers,

It's NOT Firefox fault that it cannot view your live video DVR.

  • ActiveX is PROPRIETARY (and NOT secure) so no point that FF developers will bother to implement that.
  • Before buying a CCTV security DVR, ask the supplier if it supports Firefox or any other none MS browser.
  • If they say that it supports FF, then ask them if they have a website for testing. One of the Examples: http://www.eagleeyescctv.com/Demo_1.aspx
  • I noticed that almost all China DVR doesn't support FF. However, most Taiwan DVR does support FF (or Seamonkey or Chrome).
  • I have a DVR that is still running even until now from CyberVision (Taiwan). I've been using this for over 7 years now. Power supply dies a couple of times in its lifetime and just replace it with off-the-shelf PS.
  • If you go to CyberVision website their Demo doesn't play if you are using FF. However, their products support MJPEG compression which is key when you want to use FF for viewing Live video coverage. My old CyberVision DVR can support both MJPEG and MPEG-4 compression. I'll just configure my DVR server to use MJPEG, that way I can use Firefox, Seamonkey, or Chrome in viewing Live Video when I'm out of the house.
  • I only run Linux at home.

My advice DO NOT BUY DVRs that doesn't support Firefox or Seamonkey or Chrome.

Just my two cents.
