I get constant crashes on Firefox for iOS. When I posted this in a review in the app store, you asked me to post it here. This happens both on iPhone 13 Pro as well as on an iPad Pro 11" 2018.

There is no rule on when it happens. Sometimes it happens when switching tabs, sometimes when adding tabs by opening links in the background, sometimes when just reading. Firefox slows down, becomes very unresponsive and just closes. When I open it again, I get an "woops something went wrong" popup and the tabs open again. It usually goes better after reopening, so it's not related to the websites I was visiting. For your info, this is when visiting news sites (The Guardian, VRT NWS) or forums (modulargrid.net, modwiggler, gearspace) or anything else. It's becoming very unusable and hasn't gone away despite following the updates.

I experienced very similar symptoms, which were resolved by deleting my history. I had tried everything else I could think of before this, including reinstalling the app and deactivating then reactivating Firefox Sync with my Firefox Account. None of this worked, so as a last resort I deleted my history, which resolved the issue.

If this is a viable option for you (and you haven't tried it), instructions are available here: Clear browsing history in Firefox for iOS

I just used the nuclear option described under Clear private data (but please note the cautionary note that this action will clear all of your private data and cannot be undone!), with everything selected bar Downloaded Files (as I was sure this wasn't the issue). If you'd like to take a more cautious approach you could try just selecting Cache first since that's a fairly non-destructive option. If that doesn't work then you may wish to consider the nuclear option as I did.

Best wishes, and if trying this please let us know the result.

It helped a bit with the crashes. It's not slowing down and crashing all the time, which I guess is good. But it's still not entirely stable. I've had (not network related) slowdowns. Also, when I enter a few letters in the address bar, the history keeps jumping around, making it impossible to use. Overall, very disappointed with the direction it's going. The only thing keeping me is the 'delete all cookies after each session' option that Safari doesn't have.

Hi

I am sorry to hear that Firefox for iOS is crashing. I hope that we can help resolve this for you.

As a first step, close down many of the tabs that you have open to as few as possible. Does this help reduce the incidence of a crash?

If this does not help, open the iOS Settings app, find Firefox and select Clear History and Website Data. Does this help?

Failing that, we will need to look into this in more detail with some logs from inside your copy of Firefox for iOS:

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Version and tap it several times.
  4. Scroll down and hit "Debug: copy log files to app container". This triggers the logs to be saved into the Documents folder.
  5. Open the Files App on your iOS device and navigate to Fennec > Logs. You can see the different logs files here, which you can export using the share menu from Apple to a desktop computer.
  6. Open the file and replace any email address with XXXXXXXXX - and keep a copy of this report.
  7. Copy and past the full report into https://paste.mozilla.org/, setting the two options at the top to Plain Text and Expire in one week.
  8. Select Paste Snippet on the right hand side, then copy and past the link into a reply to this thread.

I hope that this helps.

Hi,

Here it is! https://paste.mozilla.org/pEKis7Kc

I'm not using Firefox much these days. On one site (modwiggler.com) it refuses to log in. It's not crashing anymore, but still freezing.

Peter.

I am able to sign-in to that website on both Firefox for iOS. Strangely, I was unable to actually register an account with Firefox on MacOS — I had to use Edge. So it would appear there's something going on with it (not sure what).

Out of interest, in your Firefox for iOS hamburger menu > Settings > Tracking Protection (under Privacy) do you have Enhanced Tracking Protection turned on and if so is it set to Standard (default) or Strict?
