IMAP syncing, how to PREVENT past STARTUP or on demand
I understand from the Thunderbird help files that having IMAP synchronization is preferable to POP. But I'd like NOT to have Thunderbird sync once I have started it or when I do a 'GET MAIL' function. If I am in my inbox, it is annoying to have new mail appear when trying to cycle through all the un-reads. I have the option to have T'bird sync upon startup, but I can't find anything that turns it off once that occurs. Is this possible?

You mention Imap and Gmail
Gmail uses PUSH if IDLE is supported and it means gmail will open connection and force the download to allow imap account to reflect up to date situation on server. The idea of Imap is to show what is on server.
Couple of methods to use for Offline:
Going into 'Offline' mode to read emails means Thundrebird has no internet connection and so gmail will not be able to push emails. This is a quick method: You can easilly go to 'Offline' mode by clicking on the Offline/Online icon located far left in bottom 'Status bar' , click again for returning to 'Online' mode.
You may also be interested in the following which ensures you have fully downloaded copies otherwise if you only have headers you will not be able to read emails in offline mode.
- Menu app icon > File > Offline > Download/sync now
- Select checkbox: 'Mail Messages'
- Select checkbox: 'Work Offline once download and/or synchronisation is complete'
- the 'Select..' button offers you the opportunity to check all folders are selected for full copy download.
- Once all set up click on 'OK'
download.Sync occurs and then Thunderbird goes into Offline mode.

You could use offline mode. https://www.guidingtech.com/2405/access-imap-inbox-offline-thunderbird/
Update: I just saw the option (that was unchecked) "Check for new messages every XX minutes". I checked that and entered 240 minutes (4 hours); that might indeed do it, especially if I can simply click on GET MAIL when I need to.
Thanks christ1. I had read about 'offline' mode and might try that if it is not difficult to toggle between the two once I am done reading my inbox. I was hoping there was a simply option I missed that just disconnected the sync process temporarily without going too deep into the muck as described in the referenced article.

Toad-Hall - that Offline/Online icon you referred to was exactly what I was looking for. I do a download as soon as I bring up the Thunderbird app since I have that setting. Then I can immediately go offline, read all my emails and send (pending) and replies, then go back online after that is all accomplished without being interrupted with incoming emails. Perfect!
Thanks to you and all who replied.
