Getting rid of explorer from starting automatically

I run windows 7 premium. I have Firefox and explorer. Default browser is Firefox. I want to stop email verifications etc., from opening up automatically on IE Explorer even if IE is not active at the time. I have to copy the link and put it in Firefox and then follow the link. I would like to avoid this. Suggestions? Thank you. My email is ramblecharlie@gmail.com.
