Different sections of text formatted to be the same size aren't the same size - why?

I'm replying to an html email message where the original text is formatted as "Body Text, Calibri,sans-serif" and the font size is shown as "Medium". If I format my reply exactly the same way, I find that the reply text is much smaller than the original text not only while the reply is being composed (1st screenshot), but also when opened by the recipient (2nd screenshot). I must format the reply text to be "Extra Large" (where it appears much larger than the original text, 3rd screenshot) for it to appear approximately the same size when the message is received (4th screenshot). Why? How can I ensure that text that is claimed to be formatted identically *is* formatted identically?
