I need to go to my own site, which is insecure as I have no reason to shell out for an https certificate. How can I set Firefox to go to that site?

You should still be able to access insecure HTTP websites.
Are you possibly using an extension that forces HTTPS as this feature is currently still disabled in Firefox ?
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.
- switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
- do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Clear the Cache and remove the Cookies for websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).
