After upgrade to Windows 10 Versions 1809 or 1903, hotlinks from Windows 10 Mail app no longer open default browser Firefox except in background.
Hi all. I rely on quick opening of hyperlinks from Windows 10 Mail app to answer Microsoft Community forums questions in FIrefox, which is set as my default Browser, and has defaults set for http and https protocols. When I upgraded to both Windows 10 Version 1809 and later to 1903, Firefox stopped opening on it's own and instead opens a new tab every time I click the link in the background. I have to click it's taskbar shortcut to open it.
These hotlinks still work correctly in Edge and CHrome but I need Firefox for managing my Bookmarks collection to easily drag them into help posts which isn't easily done in the other browsers.
Appreciate any help.

Would you please do this :
3-bar menu (or Tools) => Options => General
Under "Tabs" - make sure to check :
"When you open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately"
This might be related to the new feature to use a dedicated profile per update channel. See e.g.:
- /questions/1260453 Open from external url a new windows in a new tab instead doesn't work
Firefox 67 and later can use a dedicated profile for each of the Firefox update channels and will lock the profile, so it can only be used by Firefox in a specific installation folder. For Release versions this profile would be a xxxxxxxx.default-release profile, profiles used in older Firefox versions usually used a xxxxxxxx.default profile (a refresh adds a time stamp).
How do it test this exactly?
Yes. Was already selected.
Hi GregCarmack, first, do you keep Firefox running or does Firefox need to launch from scratch when you click each link? You can probably tell from my question that I suggest leaving Firefox running instead of starting/closing it over and over, unless your system has extremely low memory.
Second, as cor-el mentioned, there is a change in how Firefox 67 handles external links: it always uses your default Firefox profile. So if you normally start Firefox in a different profile, then the link will open without your familiar setup and data.
You could check your default as follows:
Profile Manager Page
Inside the Firefox window that opens in the wrong profile, type or paste about:profiles in the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it.
This page should list at least one profile and could list many. Each will show links to a pair of folders; please ignore those for now.
The profile that Firefox is currently using will have this:
This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted.
Anyway, please do not delete anything here -- don't use any Remove buttons.
If another instance of Firefox is already running in your "correct" profile, that one should be marked:
This profile is in use in another application and it cannot be deleted.
If that one has a button for Set as default profile, go ahead and click that so Firefox will use it for external links.
If you try that, please let us know whether it helps, we're still trying to figure out how best to get Firefox to always use your preferred profile.
Hi JS. Thanks for helping.
I checked about:profiles and it shows my one and (to my knowledge) only Firefox Sync account with two AppData folders. There is no Set as Default button, so I guess it's default since it's the only one listed.
If I leave this Firefox WIndow open and go back to Mail app to open another mail link it does cause Firefox to take focus as desired. Does this provide any more clues to what's causing it not to take focus when closed and opened from Mail app link? Thanks!
Hi GregCarmack, I really couldn't say what should happen when Firefox is closed, as I run it 24x7. If you have noticed a change, then probably there was a change, but I couldn't tell you whether it was intentional or could be due to a bug. Hard to believe it was intentional.
