Hi,

I had screwed up my profile with some extension and now I want to purge all extensions without losing personal data, but I don't see 'reset' button in about:support. I read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1170780 but I'm using default profile and still don't see the button.

Here is my profiles.ini: ars@ars-thinkpad ~ $ cat /home/ars/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini [General] StartWithLastProfile=1

[Profile0] Name=default IsRelative=1 Path=mwad0hks.default Default=1

[Profile1] Name=ars IsRelative=1 Path=jkomnpdy.ars

Firefox version 60.2.1esr, OS Debian Stretch, installed from the official repositories.

Making reset -- an absolutely critical feature! -- such complex really disappoints me. I mean, I am sure there a lot of cases when users don't care about profiles at all but need to reset everything due to some malicious extension fucking up their Firefox.

You can copy some history-related files to the new profile, including:

  • places.sqlite
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 (only exists while Firefox is not running)
  • sessionstore-backups folder

This article details the different files: Recovering important data from an old profile.

I can't answer that. But you can manually remove your extensions quite quickly using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then click the relevant buttons on the right side.

Unfortunately, the thing I am talking about still remains broken even after extension removal. Creating totally new profile helps, but then I lose all personal data (tabs, history, etc).

Typically most Linux OS's have their own version of Firefox built from source code for their own repositories. Many times they don't build the same features that Mozilla has in their Linux tarball builds.

You could try the Refresh Firefox button on this Knowledge Base page. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-preferences-fix-problems I have seen mention of doing that in this forum. but best to backup your Profile, first. I hate that Refresh / Reset feature myself. I would rather create a new Profile and copy all the relevant files over to the new Profile as jscher2000 mentioned at the end of his 2nd posting.

Ok, I've copied the data manually as you proposed, thank you. That button at Knowledge Base page hadn't worked too...
