getting gibberish in the side bars on many sites

Maybe ESET is substituting something as part of an ad blocking feature, and whatever it is, Firefox isn't decoding it as expected.

Hi doxmail, could you give an example of a page that has this problem (direct link to the page, if a login isn't required)?
Do you think this could be a problem with advertisements that normally appear in that position?
It could be as it says advertisement below the "gibberish" . Maybe it's in a foreign language that I'm not familiar with or Mozilla may be translating it incorrectly? https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/01/politics/donald-trump-samantha-bee/index.html

If I unblock a lot of things I normally block, there is an embedded ad frame there. If I right-click > This Frame > Open Frame in New Tab, I get this address:

Is that where your gibberish is coming from?

Sometimes getting gibberish on sites indicates that a "man in the middle" is filtering your web connections, which can be your security software, a proxy, or unfortunately in some cases, malware. It was reported with Google, YouTube, and Facebook pages by some users when these sites updated their compression and the "man in the middle" didn't handle it correctly. it occurs on other sites as well, but only on mozilla, not ie or chrome on the same sites
Okay, can you try loading the frame in its own tab for further analysis. Assuming the problem continues there and it's not just while it is embedded in a page, it would be helpful if you could look at the site's SSL certificate. Either:
- right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Certificate"
- (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Certificate"
- click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Certificate" button
The important part is the issuer information. What do you find? For example, for the link I posted earlier, it's here:
