Disable "your firefox is critically out of date" in FF 56
First of all, I am NOT looking for "You should update" or "Why don't you want to update".
I have reason to use FF 56, I understand the risks, and am not looking to get into why or justify it. What I am looking for is a way to disable the message "Your Firefox is critically out of date. An update is required to stay secure." I tried all the solutions at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1192712 but they appear to no longer work in FF 56.

Was that a "Heartbeat" message?
If the method of disabling Heartbeat (the marked "Solution" in that thread) - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rate-your-firefox-experience-heartbeat - didn't work for you, I wonder if what you are seeing might be different. And it may not even be from Mozilla.
Please provide a screenshot of what you are getting.
See this support article. How do I create a screenshot of my problem? It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.
Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

The screenshot in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1192712 is exactly what I was seeing to. Now that I've come back to my PC after several hours (with FF still running), the message is now gone. I don't know whether the message times out on its own, or if one of the suggestions from the other thread (irritatingly) had a strangely delayed reaction. So it's gone for the moment, and I can only hope it doesn't come back. :/
Use the Firefox ESR program, it is last years, it is maintained and all functionality just lost works again.

Not exactly, some extensions have updated to be incompatible with Firefox 52 and history probably will be lost when downgrading. See: Switch to Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) for personal use.
Also, how would going to an even older version of Firefox avoid upgrade messages??

Yes, that is the Heartbeat message bar. As mentioned by Alice Wyman in that thread, see this KB page > https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rate-your-firefox-experience-heartbeat < to learn how to "opt-out" of Heartbeat participation.
Firefox ESR works the the majority of extensions, all my 12 work. There are fewer updates and you have a year to wait for Quantum to work better and some apps to be created.
Upgrades? Just turn them off in settings.
Personally, I just had enough and am using Vivaldi.
Simpler, faster and web pages load, Quantum just kept getting errors.
I was an FF user and advocate since. v1 But it has just lost the plot now.
