Hey, I have a question regarding how sync saves data. How do I ensure the latest settings are synced?

The situation I recently had was, I fired up an older PC I had on the shelf and when I opened Firefox, my add-ons synced to the settings on the old PC. So when I opened Firefox on my main PC the add-ons were reverted back to the old ones. I haven't gone through all my bookmarks yet so I don't know if I lost anything but I back them up a couple times per week so I'm not too worried about them.

Am I missing the point of how sync is supposed to work? I like the idea of logging on to any PC and having my bookmarks and add-ons readily available but that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.

Is there a way to save the settings rather than sync them so I can update Firefox on different PC's? This has happened a few different times and I have to waist time changing things back to the way I want them to be. It would be nice if I could have an option to save my settings when I make a change then when I log in with a different PC I can update to the new settings.

Any advise or guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Sync is supposed to synchronize the latest / newest settings only -- but how old is the version of Firefox that is on the old PC?

Try using the Add-ons Manager feature behind the "Gear" icon - "Check for Updates" to see if the newer PC gets updated version of those extensions.

As far as backing up your Profile (where Firefox prefs and data is stored) see this support article: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

About the only additional advice I can offer is to not use Add-on Sync feature; that feature doesn't fully synchronize add-on data in my experience, depending upon the individual extensions that are being used. Not every add-on developer has embraced Sync; some have poor to no documentation for about:config prefs that may need to be turned on to get data for the add-on to be synchronized. While other add-ons either automatically support Sync, and others don't at all. I found it to be a real crap-shoot when I used Sync to setup Firefox on a new PC two years ago; after wasting a couple of weeks "fixing" crap that didn't get sync'd I gave up and just copied my Firefox Profile over to the new PC.

Sync for Bookmarks and for Tabs from other devices seems to work fine, but the number of Tabs that do get sync'd is very limited - like maybe 10 Tabs is all that sync's. But I haven't used Sync much in the last couple of years ...

When it comes to syncing tabs there is a maximum payload send to the Sync server, so if you have tabs with long URLs then you will run earlier into this limit than with only tabs that have a short URL.

There is only a limit to the history that is synced (60 days).

Thanks for the reply. I turned off syncing for add-ons so I'm just syncing my bookmarks for now. I've never needed to do much as far as syncing tabs so not an issue there.
