Hello,

My browser started to enter a "not responding" state recently. When I reboot, it would not do it for some time, then it starts doing it and I can hear a squealing noise from my notebook.

Symptoms: - always non responding a few seconds after I start Firefox - squealing braking noise fromhardware - other browsers work with no issues - once it does it for the first time after reboot, it would do it occassionaly while I`m using it

What I tried: - removed it from trusted programs in Windows firewall and then added it again - updated Avast antivirus, specifically told it to use it as trusted (firefox.exe) - stopped hardware acceleration - created a new database (I think, the renaming of two folders to .old which is in the troubleshooting guides) - stopped all add-ons - removed all add-ons - removed Firefox and then reinstalled its latest version - cleared all cache

None of these solved it. What I noticed about its occurence is that it first started after Avast asked me to update the antivirus, then upon running the update it did install Chrome and something else which I missed. I removed Chrome immediatey and again made FF my default browser. At the same time I think came the FF update which I installed. Now its hanging...

Would appreciate any help.

Open Windows uninstall. Sort the entries by date installed. Check for anything you don't know or want.

It’s very sad, but many software downloaders/ installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well.

You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the itsy bitsy teeny weeny fine print.

You are thinking you are giving the installer permission to install the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the Manual Option Instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does.

From now on, everyone needs to Use The Manual Option to put a stop to this.

Note that these programs can also change browser/computer settings.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

In case the above doesn't solve the problem : On a safe website, disable   AVAST,   and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks,

I did get two warnings for malware originating from the firefox folder, both times by Avast. It did say it ha blocked it, but on a security scan after rKill ha been engaged, nothing is found. I suspect malware.

Did look at the entries already, nothing else comes up as installed, weird. Now when I came on here, I was offeredto refresh my Firefox and after the refresh it does work as it used to, no hangs or freezes but let`s see if that would change.

Otherwise it is sad they installstuff you don`t want and that usually messes all your settings. I know they have to make money but thats not the way.

Ialways use custom installs because about any piece of software today seems to install some additional software that may even harm your productivity. But this time I was tricked as it was an update. An update which installed new programs, interesting logic by the Avast guys.

You may decide to change to MSE as your antivirus. I used to use Avast, but their browser add-on was more than annoying, it prevented me from going to some safe websites. Now use MSE for the last 2+ years and have stayed safe online.

There is also a tiny program that I installed called unchecky, it prevents unwanted add-ons when we install software, including updates. I put it on the computers of the seniors I help with computer problems. It doesn't catch everything, but does catch most of those unwanted programs.

'goodwitch'  makes some good points . Now there is 'Windows Defender',   that replaces 'Microsoft Security Essentials'   -   that, plus using the safest browser on the planet :   it's like you're in Fort Knox.
