How to stop firefox from constantly popping up firefox homepage, up to 20

more options

Everytime I play a game, firefox decides to pop up about 20-30 pages of my homepage. How do I stop this? I scanned my computer for viruses and have adblocker and none of these work are contributing. Its been going on for 2 weeks now. If I'm not using firefox, it happens on Chrome as well.

I have. The only identified threats that other programs find are cookies.

This would take a while, but could you search the programs folder for everything that has a modified date in April 2016? Individual file dates probably are less important than folder dates.

For now, change your home page to about:blank

Type about:preferences#general<enter> in the address bar.

There are two settings;

  • When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display. Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

  • Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want displayed.

  1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
  2. Use Bookmark
  3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any webpage or about: page you want.

@ jscher2000: I already scanned the programs folder 3 times. Only cookies. Scanned music I downloaded from March. Nothing. The only thing I did in the last two weeks was rip a music CD to my computer.

@FredMcD: My homepage is set to facebook, not that I use it as often as everyone else though.

Okay, you scanned, and those programs didn't find anything they consider to be a problem. Maybe something new is there that they do not point out. That is why I suggest looking for recently added folders using Windows' search feature.

You also might want to try the Autoruns program. It will show you what is set to start up with Windows. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

And check the Windows Task Scheduler for anything that might be running on a schedule throughout the day.

@ jscher2000: Used autorun but issue is still persisting. My newer files are all ripped music and print screened photos.

I appreciate everyone's help, but nothing is working :( :( Last resort would be a new computer.

You might try the specialized forums listed in the malware support article. They can walk you through the use of advanced tools to see what else is running that might be responsible.
