Why does clicking a link open a new tab instead of using the current window?

Suddenly, Firefox is doing something new. When I'm browsing on Amazon, for instance, and I click on a product, it opens in a new tab, instead of staying on the current page. This is causing problems as (1) I now have WAY too many tabs open and (2) I can't use the back button, since each tab is "new." I prefer to look at a product, then click "back" to go back to the search page.

I have checked my preferences, and my tab preferences. I have restarted Firefox. I have restarted Firefox in safe mode with no add ons. I just want to be able to shop in ONE tab and not have six running tabs while browsing.

Unless Amazon is setting up the links to open in a new tab, Firefox may be confused about the state of your keyboard. Specifically, it may think you are holding down the Cmd key. Sometimes you can clear that up by pressing the key several times. Other times you might have to quit Firefox and start it up again.
