When I try to print from Firefox, my pages are all messed up. The support page says to reset Firefox printer settings. It says to type "about:config" in the location bar. But when I do that - I get a message that Navigation has been Cancelled. Now what do I do?

In the print preview - it is printing about 3 words on a page. Any other ideas?

Do you mean it leaves 99% of the page empty, or it thinks you have extremely tiny paper?

  • If Firefox is leaving most of the page empty, there might be a problem parsing some unusual style rule in a particular page. If it does that with ALL pages, I would suspect problems with margin settings.
  • Problems with the paper size come up from time to time. Usually resetting all the preferences for a particular printer fixes it, but with Brother printers, there may be a faster workaround.

I'm going to suggest a return trip to about:config in case you didn't hit all of the possible data that needs clearing:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste print and pause while the list is filtered

(3) For each setting that specifically mentions the problem printer, right-click and Reset it. The fastest way is to right-click with the mouse and then press the r key on the keyboard with your other hand.

Note: In a couple threads involving Brother printers, the preference printer_printer_name.print_paper_data was set to 256 and when the user edited it to 1 that by itself fixed the paper size problem. If you use a Brother printer and see a 256 there, you can edit the value by doubling-clicking it or using right-click>Modify.

Any improvement?

Could you be more specific about the problems with the printout?

Do the same problems occur in Print Preview, or does the problem occur between Firefox and the printer itself? You can call up Print Preview using either of these:

  • Print button on the graphical menu (accessed using the "3-bar" menu button)
  • on the menu bar, File menu

To open the about:config page make sure not to use the quotation marks. If it still won't open, your Firefox program files might be damaged. For that I suggest:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 44.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows:

(32-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(Other systems)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders, but for obvious reasons, don't just copy everything over:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions and got about:config to work. However, after following the Reset instructions on the Mozilla website, I still have the same problem. In the print preview - it is printing about 3 words on a page. Any other ideas?
