When I open firefox my home page or any address is very slow in opening. But when I highlight the address no matter what it is, it pops open. I have done a suggested reset on firefox but it did not save passwords or settings, so I am reluctant to do so again.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

When I opened Firefox in safe mode took 1min15sec to open. Didn't help unfortunately.

Not really. If the issue goes away in Firefox Safe Mode, then the problem is somewhere in Firefox. If the issue s still there, the problem may be another program on your computer.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

Still the same, no change have removed all add on's and ran intense maintenance on system along with scans for malware and virus scans.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Okay finally reset the browser, but now I am having a really hard time getting back my passwords- not the sharpest when it comes to this stuff. Was able to get back old bookmarks from old profile.

Had a devil of a time getting bookmarks/ passwords back, but did it. Seems to be going a little bit faster after reset. Thanks for the help.
