I had an idea for Thunderbird. I haven't been able to figure out a way to do this, so I thought I'd suggest it.

I receive a lot of junk email, on multiple email accounts linked into Thunderbird, some from the same source. It would make it much easier to be able to set up one list of filters, instead of a list of filters for each separate email account. If this is already possible, could someone explain to me how to do it? If it's not yet possible, is it something that could be considered for future updates?

It doesn't really make sense to create filters for fighting spam. Typically spam messages have different subjects and sender email, so you'll have to adjust your filters all the time. Turn on junk mail controls instead. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls

If you still want to create filters, you can copy the filter definitions to another account. If you want to duplicate an accounts filters in another account you don't need to create them again. Exit Thunderbird and copy the "msgFilterRules.dat" file instead. If the account is in another profile and it uses custom headers you will also need to copy the mailnews.customHeaders setting from prefs.js.

I already have the junk mail controls turned on. The problem with that is that emails that I want to see from new contacts who aren't in my address book, yet, are sent to the spam/junk mail folders. I then have to go through hundreds of messages to find them. Setting filters to mark the junk messages as "junk" marks them so it is easier to find the ones I want to see. Much of the junk I receive comes from the same domains, even in multiple accounts, so I set the filter "contain: so and so domain" and it marks all messages from that domain as junk.

If I were to copy the filters from one .dat file to another account folder, will it complete overwrite the existing .dat file, or will it combine them?

re: If I were to copy the filters from one .dat file to another account folder, will it complete overwrite the existing .dat file, or will it combine them?

Yes it will overwrite. There is only the one 'msgFilterRules.dat' file per mail account.

Please note that Thunderbird must be closed/exited before doing any changes to Profile folders.

However,'msgFilterRules.dat' can be opened using 'Notepad'. At the top it will say eg: version="9" logging="yes"

then it lists the rules. A rule is typically contructed like this example: name= "Sumo" enabled= "yes" type="17" action="Move to folder" actionValue="mailbox:// mail account info /SUMO" condition="AND (subject, contains,SUMO)"

So you can copy paste individual rules across to another account adding them below the current list. But before doing any modification, it would be a good idea to make a backup copy of 'msgFilterRules.dat' file and save to eg: desktop. Then if an error occurs you can use a copy of the backup copy to fix.

then back in TB Tools > Message Filters you can sort the order of the rules if required.
