Task bar pinning
My task bar button for Firefox on Windows7 vanishes when I open Firefox which makes opening multiple windows a pain. How do I keep a button always on the taskbar? Explorer does it.
Thanks people.

Hi milman2000, your description of "now I have to keep right clicking and pointing to open more than one window" sounds like what I see with any pinned app that has more than one window open.
For me, on Windows 7, a single left-click on a pinned shortcut has these effects:
- No windows open: launch the app
- One window open: activate the app's window
- More than one window open: display a list of windows
Before Windows 7, I used XP and the Firefox shortcut in the "Quick Launch" area of the Windows XP task bar was a button I could use over and over to launch new windows.
If you want a Windows XP-style Quick Launch bar on the Windows 7 Taskbar, you can use the steps in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975784 (I haven't tried it myself)

hello, please try to reset firefox and see if this can address the issue...
edit: if not, try to unpin the firefox icon from the taskbar, launch the browser from the start menu and pin the icon that shows up when the firefox is running to the taskbar again...

Thanks, had already reset Firefox. Tried unpinning/repinning as suggested but no joy.
Some users have reported that Firefox opens in front of the Task bar and blocks access, but a Reset should resolve that issue by removing the settings file that sometimes gets corrupted and causes that problem.
Are you having that same issue, or is the Task bar visible and the Firefox tile/button on the bar simply vanishes? It's hard to imagine what could cause that.
Your second part - the button vanishes when Firefox opens then returns when I close it. For years I just clicked it several times to have more than one window open, now I have to keep right clicking and pointing to open more than one window.
Open a new window <Control> N
This also could be a Windows problem.

Oh you clever man,
I followed the steps in kb 975784, and ended up with icons on the right hand side of the new task bar created, but then was able to drag everything over to the left - I then deleted the original icons that were still there and voilá, now have icons that I click the number of times I want windows and it all happens and the icons remain, so thank you very much it's made life much easier!
Thanks, jscher2000. I've wanted to do that for years.
