Why is https://reg.usps.com untrusted?

more options

OK, I'll fess up. I am using an ancient version of Firefox (29.0). I can't update right now for various reasons that I won't go into right now (unless pressed). But the fact that I'm using an old version of FF shouldn't cause an emminently trustworthy site like reg.usps.com to come up as "This Connection is Untrusted" should it?? Opera on the same box/platform doesn't seem to have a problem with it anyway.

I just wanted to buy some stamps by mail fer cryin' out loud.

P.S. Under "Technical Details" I see the following:

reg.usps.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted. (Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

Really?? The US guberment couldn't even afford to spring for a proper certificate signed by somebody else??

Well, that would seem to be the inference I'm supposed to draw when I look up the error code on this web page:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/connection-untrusted-error-message

I don't get the error, so there is hope.

The "untrusted issuer" code can be caused by security software, malware, or proxies that intercept your secure browsing, but in that case, you'd usually see it on a number of sites. Can you access all other HTTPS sites without complaint?

I've not had any other problems on any other sites.

Just within the past 1/2 hour, I've been looking at (https) the whois.arin.net web site and also (https) www.spamhaus.org and also (https) web.nvd.nist.gov and also (https) icis.corp.delaware.gov and last but by no means least... (https) support.mozilla.org, which I am typing into as we speak. All of these other sites are working just fine for me... totally normal. It only seems to be the reg.usps.com site that's causing Firefox to raise an objection.

Please try this exact set of steps, to see if you can reproduce what I'm seeing...

1) Google for "purchase stamps by mail" but without the quotes.

2) The first NON-paid result should be a link to the store.usps.com web site. Click on it.

3) Once there, you should see a button along the top edge of the page that says "Register / Sign In". Click that. Then tell me if you get the Firefox error/warning about this being untrusted.

Maybe I really did find a snafu/screw-up on the usps.com web site. But like I said, Opera doesn't seem to have any trouble with it... only Firefox. (But I prefer to use Firefox except in some rare cases, so I hope I can get this to work.)

P.S. Remember, I'm using (ancient?) Firefox 29.0. Also, I'm on FreeBSD... not that that should matter at all.

Hummm... tried again, the exact sam steps from my Windoze7 box... where I have FF 40.0.3 and sure enough, it works with no problem.

So I guess something obscure (but perhaps long since fixed) is causing the crusty FF 29.0 on my FreeBSD box to not work.

I guess that I can't put off my ungrade any longer :-(

Hmm, I did my test in Firefox 41 on Windows 7, so I can't match your configuration.
