How can I undo the latest update

more options

Firefox was updated to v47. I absolutely hate it Is there any way to roll back or undo this update without having to uninstall it, and losing all my passwords, bookmarks, history etc? If this is not possible is there any way of personalizing the current version. I hate the search bar in the tabs, and the tabs are see through, how do I change this? I am not tech savvy so plain english please Also please do not tell me that I should keep the current version (apps etc) I want it gone

Hi Karen, your Firefox reported to the forum that you have version 46. Or did you post from a different computer?

Could you describe the problem/changes in more detail? If Firefox performed a Refresh during the update, your settings would have gone back to defaults and your extensions would have been removed. All of your old settings would be in a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data. Do you see anything like that? If this is the problem, installing an earlier version of Firefox is not going to help, but instead you need to roll back to your old settings. Since that's a manual process involving many steps, I'll spare you the details at this point until you confirm that you're interested.

A "friend" updated Firefox to v47. I tried to install an earlier version, that is why it is coming up as v46 I do not like the search bar in each tab. I would like to go back to having it above the tabs, as I am getting very confused the way it is now. Also the tabs are now transparent, making it hard for me to see them properly I am elderly and finding it harder to cope with changes Not sure what version I was on but it was before all these changes could have been v45 I also get a "youre connection is not secure" when trying to get onto a few web sites, mainly Google I also had a "quick tabs" on the start up page which I could personalize with all my regular web pages, this is now also gone. Thank you for your help

Hmm, this is a suspicious number of changes all at once. I think you might have lost your theme and some add-ons.

Could you check on the Windows desktop for a folder named Old Firefox Data? If you find that folder, check inside to see whether it has recently updated contents.

If your friend is handy with computers perhaps they can return and help out. Or might that make it worse?

There is no folder on the desktop. The theme is still there, some add ons are out of date, but thats not the main issue. The friend has left, I have asked at a computer company and they tell me I have to uninstall the current version, and reinstall and earlier version of Firefox, but that will lose all my passwords, bookmarks etc, which is what I;m trying to avoid. Is there any way of saving them (maybe to a usb drive) and reinstalling them to the other version of Firefox?

Well, let's go over the issues:

(1) I do not like the search bar in each tab. I would like to go back to having it above the tabs, as I am getting very confused the way it is now.

Do you mean the Find Bar that appears if you use Ctrl+f? The Find Bar changed from being "per window" to being "per tab" way back in Firefox 25, and if I recall correctly, was always on the bottom of the page. If you had it at the top and it was shared across all tabs, you might have been using an add-on like one of these:

If you check your extensions, do you have one of those, or another one that might affect the find bar? To open the Add-ons page, either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then peruse the list on the right side for that one or any others that seem related to the find bar. Usually an extension's Options button lets you select details such as top/bottom position for the bar.

In case the problem is that the extension needs to be updated for Firefox 47, try the button above the extensions list that has a gear/wheel/cog icon and it provides access to "Check for Updates".

(2) Also the tabs are now transparent, making it hard for me to see them properly

I think this is Firefox conforming to an annoying feature of Windows 7. You can turn off the strange partial "see-through" behavior in the Windows Control Panel.

Alternately, you can install a lightweight theme to provide a solid background. That's faster. Hopefully you can find one you like here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/themes/

There is a "solid" category in the left bar if the artistic ones are too distracting.

I also get a "youre connection is not secure" when trying to get onto a few web sites, mainly Google

This usually indicates that Firefox is not fully set up to work with your security software. Could you review this article to see whether it covers your security software: How to troubleshoot security error codes on secure websites?

I also had a "quick tabs" on the start up page which I could personalize with all my regular web pages, this is now also gone.

That sounds like it was a feature of an extension. Assuming that extension is still installed, can you identify what it's called? Then we could look up how to get it running again.

No I didn't mean the find bar. The search bar/window, the one with the magnifying glass and the word search in it, and the www./https. bar/window are now both IN the tabs. Each tab has these bars in it. I would like to have just one search bar and www. bar at the top and the page and the tabs underneath. Is this possible?

You can move it out the same line of "www" box by [windows] right click on the menu area -> select customize -> drag search box to area you want.

Great, that worked. Tried something similar before, without success. Slowly getting my head around this new layout, but I still don't like it

Okay, I think I might see what you mean now by "in the tabs." The "tab bar" moved from the bottom (below the main toolbar) to the top in Firefox 4 (above the main toolbar). Up through Firefox 28 (I think), there was a built-in setting to switch it back but that was removed in Firefox 29. Since then you would typically use an add-on to switch it back, such as the previously mentioned Classic Theme Restorer or one that was just focused on tabs. Perhaps you were using one of those.
