I've seen others with this problem, but the solutions haven't worked for me. When I go to certain websites or try to watch certain videos my browser hangs up. When I close the browser and try to start FF again I get this message: "Firefox is already running, but is not responding..." I am unable to load any other websites in different tabs and I'm unable to end FF process in task manager. The only way to end the process is to reboot the computer using the power button.

I discovered this week that I had about 5 .default sub-directories in my profile folder. I created a new one and deleted the others.

Today alone I tried running FF in safe mode after a fresh reboot. The troublesome sites (http://www.progressivetalk1150.com/main.html and any msnbc.nbc video) worked fine. I restarted FF in normal mode, disabled all of the plugins and enabled them one by one, testing the troublesome sites each time. Each one worked fine. I also shut off Advanced Systemcare, Malware Fighter and Objectdock. The sites worked fine with it all running. After surfing the internet for about 45 minutes I tried the ktlk.com site out of curiosity and FF hanged again and I had to reboot my computer with the power button.

I've also tried removing "read only" on the properties for the profiles directory. Still happens and "read only" is checked again after a reboot.

This is a problem that has been dogging me all summer. Prior to this FF has been performing flawlessly.

To make things more complicated, while troublesome sites may work using the IE engine in FF, this morning I tried the ktlk.com site in IE for the first time this morning and that browser hanged also.

Other specific examples of this happening I can think of from this summer: When using Facebook I click to watch a video from the Letterman show or videos from msnbc.

Only a check mark in the Read-only box means that a folder or file is Read-only.
Windows doesn't check all the files in a folder so instead displays a green block to indicate that it is not sure.
You always need to look at the files individually.
Easiest to do that is to make the Attributes visible in "View > Details" mode: Choose Details in Windows Explorer.

Looks like I solved the problem - finally. After it hung up again on a 60 Minutes video, I did a clean install of Quicktime, Shockwave, Silverlight and any other flash/video related software. That didn't do it. I wanted to do a system restore back to when I didn't recall this problem happening, which would have been May. I could only go back to June 13th, so I did that. The I spent a great deal of time getting the Windows updates that we got during the summer and dealing with fixing my anti-virus. My browser has been behaving ever since. Having done all of that, I think the problem may have been either iObit Malware Fighter or iObit Advanced Systemcare. I still use them, but I stopped having them run at start-up. Someday will entertain our grand kids with stories of how we spent half of our time on the computer just getting them to run properly. Good times!

I have Iobit as well and I have the same problem sometimes but i dont think it is advanced system care. Just Cntrl+Alt+Del Start the task manager under processes you will see firefox.exe. Just terminate it, and that should solve the problem. It happens to the most of us from time to time. For unexplained reasons. I have all latest add-ons still wont make a difference.

That's part of the problem - Firefox won't shut down even in Task Manager. I have to reboot the computer using the power button every time it hangs up. This is a problem I've been dealing with all summer.

Confirmed. I decided to scan my computer for malware and watch a 60 Minutes video. Firefox hung up again. After I restarted the computer - without Malware Fighter running - I've been able to watch the video without any problems.
