Why can't firefox for Windows 8 find GoodGopher.com INDEPENDENT NEWS AND INFORMATION search engine, considering I use it on Windows 7?

Out of over 3600 search engines to choose from, firefox on Windows 8 can't seem to find GoodGopher.com. I use this search engine all the time on Windows 7, and I will have it on Windows 8 one way or another.

Hi   !

Have you set it as default search engine in :

3-bar menu => Options => Search  ?

Or (if you don't want to use it as your default search engine) added it to the list of search engines  ?

I don't know what you mean by 'Firefox on Windows 8 add-on' (?) When I click on GoodGopher.com I get there right away ......

Would you take a look at this thread : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1105797

It is possible that you have some content blocking extension that prevents installing this search engine.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

a) I don't want it as a default engine. I need to use it for when other search engines censor good information--keep information access from us.

b) I don't do anything anyone called Dr. Evil recommends.

c) My Windows 8 notebook does not list GoodGoopher.com in the search engine search bar anymore. They have over 3600 search engines but have removed GoodGopher.com. This is NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE NOTICED FIREFOX CENSORING!!! I believe they are infiltrated by elite parasites who own most corporations.

d) I typed in GoodGopher.com, and then it showed up. I repeat, I did not have to do this with Windows 7. Each successive Windows becomes more constrictive, more orwellian.

Instead of blaming Firefox, would you at least give the suggestions, given to you by cor-el and me, a try  ?

What bar is it, exactly? Firefox only comes with fewer than 10 pre-defined search engines. If you see 3600 choices, I wonder if you are using a search-related add-on or a completely separate program instead of Firefox's built-in search bar.

I see, you mean the add-on search engines that people have posted to the Add-ons site. You can get it directly from the source. See my next reply.

Never mind that last question, I figured out what you meant. So apparently nobody has created a GoodGopher search plugin and submitted it to the Add-ons site. You can install it directly from GoodGopher. This is very straightforward:

(1) Open the site and observe that plus sign on a green circle on the magnifying glass on Firefox's search bar. Click that.

(2) On the drop-down panel, click the choice to add the site's search plugin to your Firefox. Screen shot attached for reference.

If you are prompted to make it your default, it sounds as though that's what you want. If you are not prompted, you can proceed to step three.

(3) To set the newly added search engine as your default, drop down the panel again, right-click the desired search engine, and choose Set As Default Search Engine.

There is also a link on the page to add GoodGopher as a search engine.

  • Make GoodGopher your default search engine

Note that you can also right-click in the search bar on the and use "Add a Keyword for this Search" to be able to use this search engine via the location/address bar.

@md4s :

As you have made it clear that you do not want GoodGopher as your default search engine, steps 1) and 2), as described in jscher2000's last post, seems to be what you've been looking for .....

See the link to this thread I gave you earlier : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1105797

If you click on the 3 bar icon, then options, then search, you get a list of search engines which don't include most. If you look beneath the list, you can click on "Add Search Engines". You then get the 3600+ search engines that included GoodGopher.com in Windows 7 version, but now, in Windows 8.1 version, it is not listed in those 3600+ search engines.

As I stated, my problem was solved by typing in GoodGopher.com in the alternate search engine bar. It asks if you want to add this one. I wonder if that is even still an option in Windows 10 version. Each version of Windows gets more restrictive, more controlled by big brother, and it appears firefox is doing the same.

You said   (and I quote) :

" I typed in GoodGopher.com, and then it showed up. "

You didn't say anything about adding it   .....

It is an option in   Windows 10   .......

And Firefox makes it possible for you to add any search engine you want   .......

You said that you solved your problem, so :   all's well that ends well.
