I have always been able to delete cookies in Firefox. With the latest version, I cannot see a delete button nor move the cursor to see a delete button. How do I actually delete the cookies without a visible delete button?

How do you usually delete cookies? In Firefox's Cookies dialog, there are two buttons at the bottom: Remove Selected and Remove All. If you are used to a Delete button, it could be that you have been using an add-on to delete cookies.

You can access the built-in Cookies dialog for the current site using the Page Info dialog. Either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, the current site is automatically entered into the search box at the top so you can remove the site's cookies individually. If you want to see ALL cookies, you can clear that box.

Does that work?

Hi, there is a Firefox v 38.0.1 available, so try updating first: 3-bar menu > Help (question mark at bottom) > About Firefox. If that doesn't help, this will give you more info - Clear cookies and site data in Firefox

If you are still unable to remove cookies as detailed in the above article, please Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thanks so much for taking time to reply, but that is way too complicated for me. What has Mozilla done to ruin what was an easy system to use. Yesterday I could delete cookies, today I can't. Looks like it may be time to change browsers.

When you have clicked on Show Cookies, the Remove button should appear. If it doesn't, restart Firefox to see if that helps. If not, you should try Safe Mode as above.

Alternatively, If you wish, you can go back to the old version of Options: Type about:config into the address bar, press Enter, accept the warning, scroll down to browser.preferences.inContent and double click to change 'Value' from True to False, taking care not to alter anything else.

You can press the Delete key in the Cookie Manager to remove the currently highlighted/selected cookie.

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Thank each and every one of you for helping me think through what was happening and solving the problem. I could not see the delete button for the cookies nor navigate to it. Finally, it occurred to me that the tool bars were taking up a lot of space and maybe if I closed one or more of them I could see the delete button. Sure enough, I closed a tool bar and the delete button became visible. I didn't have this problem with the previous version of Foxfire and am not sure why it surfaced now but the problem is solved. Again, thank each of you for your help!

Thank you for discovering that.

I guess an alternative might be to shrink the page temporarily (Ctrl- a couple times) so it fall fits in the visible content area, and then zoom it back up (Ctrl+ a couple times) when you're done with it.

But if a lot of users have "short" screens, we'll probably see other posts raising this same issue.

Are you using the default theme or a custom theme?

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
