There is a problem in farsi Alphabetical order in mozilla firefox, because even if I set the language to Farsi(fa-AF), it brings "و" before "ه" and brings "و" after "آ" while the correct order is in "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_alphabet".

To illustrate, we are developing an extension that uses the following code to set the language to farsi:

Intl.Collator(locale)

I may not be able to help directly but thought I would ask for further details that may assist someone else.

What versions of Firefox have you seen this issue on. Does it appear to be something that has changed very recently ?

I am not sure I understand what you are asking.

  • Is the problem with certain alphabetical sorts ?
Possibly including for instance the bookmarks library where Firefox is able to sort by alphabetical order.
  • Is it a problem with characters being moved or transposed ?
You for instance type letters in a specific order - maybe in the location bar - but that displayed order does not match.
  • Something else ? I've got it wrong !

Who is affected

  • Is this thought to be something affecting most people using farsi on Firefox ?
  • Is this same problem mentioned on other websites.
    • English - Sorry they will need to be English language to make sense to me.
    • Farsi, Arabic etc - I can always have a go with Google translate. If the problem is real (as in a Firefox issue) and affecting most users then whoever deals with the problem will I am sure appreceite links to sites in farsi

Thank you for your reply,

I am using firefox v.35 and have seen it from v.33. actually before that version I did not check out this problem.

My exact question is: A problem with certain alphabetical sorts, but I have this problem in an extension we developed for researchers and a lot of our users have reported this problem. to explain more we have a list of items in our extension that its alphabetical sort has problem when the user types in Farsi. for example attached an image of our extension in which the order of farsi characters is incorrect ("و" comes after "آ" and is wrong)

Thank you, Hajar

You could try to file a bug for this, but it is best to try to ensure others may reproduce this, and determine which Firefox version is first affected.

A fairly easy test would be to narrow this down would be to test on an install of the unofficial third party (I presume you use Windows) Firefox Portable ESR. That may be easily installed as an additional browser and is based on Fx31.4

As this is seen whilst developing and using an add-on it is probably best asking next in the add-ons forum

If you start another thread or file a bug you may wish to post back here with the link so we may follow your progress.

Have you tried creating Firefox bookmarks folders and bookmarks with farsi names and then sorting and inverse sorting in alphabetical order if you see a problem doing that it is a general Firefox UI issue and bug may be filed. If I create unsorted folders in order "و" , "ه" , "آ" ,

They sort into alpha order "آ" , "ه" , "و" ,
