Firefox screen too wide after recent update

I just downloaded the recommended updates and now have Firefox 28.0. But now, the webpages I view run off the screen and a horizontal scrollbar appears. Pages were fitting correctly before the update. How can I make the pages fit again?

Do you recall which version you were using before? There were some major changes affecting how Firefox zooms pages in Firefox 22, but not much has changed since then.

To manually reduce the page size, you can try one or both of these:

  • Reduce zoom by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the - key
  • Reset zoom by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the 0 (zero) key

If you use any extensions related to zoom (for example, NoSquint, or Default FullZoom Level), make sure those also are updated. You can check for extension updates on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then look for the "gear" button above the list and use "Check for Updates".

Does that help at all?

Note: if the toolbars are grossly oversized, or you have other symptoms, please mention those as they may indicate a very different issue.

Are all elements in Firefox larger or only content on web pages?

You can set the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx pref on the about:config page to 1.0 or on Windows 8 to 1.25 and if necessary adjust layout.css.devPixelsPerPx starting from 1.0 in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 or 0.9) to make icons show correctly.

Use an extension to adjust the text size in the user interface and the page zoom in the browser window.

You can look at this extension to adjust the font size for the user interface.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoScript extension if web pages need to be adjusted after changing layout.css.devPixelsPerPx.

Hi, thank you cor-el and jscher2000 for your reply. I changed layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to one, which made everything fit again as it had before the update, but now the text is smaller! I looked at both the theme-font-size-changer and nosquint addons, but both had warnings about malicious software and the authors not being verified.

jscher2000: sorry, I don't recall the version of Firefox before applying the updates. The toolbars were not grossly oversized after the update.

cor-el: the content/text all seemed to be the same size after the update, but ran off the screen.

Hi firefoxq, the layout.css.devPixelsPerPx is a multiplier. If you set it to 1.1, that's +10% zoom or 110% of normal text size. Maybe you can find a magic number that is just right but, if not, please know that very few extension authors purchase the necessary certificate to sign their extensions, so the warning about not being verified and only installing software you trust is very common. I suggest always checking the reviews on the Add-ons site to learn of any recent issues.
