Can't download to Desktop

All of a sudden after one of firefox's MANY "updates" I am now getting this error when trying to download to my Desktop which is where I want my downloads to go:

"C:\Users\*********\Desktop\***** could not be saved, because you cannot change the contents of that folder."

I haven't changed anything, downloaded any useless plugins that just slow down firefox slower than it already is, and I haven't done anything to warrant this error. I refuse to set another folder because my desktop is where I want my downloads to go. They are easy to delete because they are right there and I don't have to open multiple folders to delete files.

This seems to be a Firefox bug so I am guessing that it should be fixed on their end and I shouldn't have to do anything because I opened Chrome and downloaded just fine to my desktop with zero issues. I just can't download to my desktop with Firefox.

Hello dyrelogan, rename the mimeTypes.rdf file to mimeTypes.rdf.old in profile folder and check it again, see for more info : Reset download actions for all file types

thank you

This issue can also be caused by anti-virus software that is blocking files and is prevent Firefox from moving them to the specified download folder.

It is possible that your anti-virus software is corrupting the downloaded files or otherwise interfering with downloading files.

See "Disable virus scanning in Firefox preferences - Windows"

I've got the same problem. Can't download anything to anywhere, just get the same reply as Dyrelogan.

IE works fine doing exactly the same task. Tried temporarily disabling the firewall and antivirus, tried the Firefox reset also, but no difference.

So it seems to be a problem with Firefox. I also installed the English Firefox in place of my French version and the message "... could not be saved because you cannot change the contents of that folder" went from French to English. That shows the message comes from Firefox, not the OS. I'm on Vista and Firefox 18.0.2 any other ideas?

I also did the mimetypes.rdf to .old with no difference.

One thing I do note is that I get a zero byte file in my download folder, with the name of the file I tried to download.

Try to disable the real-time (live) scanning of files in your anti-virus software temporarily to see if that makes downloading work.
