Websites were loading as HTML code only. Ran troubleshooting, now websites will not load at all.

I am posting this from Google Chrome, as I am currently unable to use Firefox at all.

Earlier today, I discovered that I was unable to load certain websites properly. It started with TV Tropes, which occasionally would load as just HTML code with no actual page display. As the day wore on, I found this happening more often, with star-tribune.com, nytimes.com and eventually even with Google -- sometimes the site would load OK, but sometimes I'd just get HTML code instead, either on refresh or after restarting Firefox.

So, I went through all the troubleshooting tips. I disabled all my add-ons, I tried starting in Safe Mode, I deleted Firefox and reinstalled it, I tried a new profile. Not only did none of this work, I am now entirely unable to get anything to load in Firefox. Anytime I attempt to open a web page, it just sits there saying "Waiting for www.google.com..." forever.

This problem is not happening in Chrome, but it is happening in Internet Explorer, which I opened today for the first time in several months to test. Any ideas what's happening?

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

That seems to have done the trick. Thanks!

OK, apparently it didn't do the trick. The problem has returned in its early stages (web pages either loading very slowly and/or with only the HTML code visible).

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

I did try this while originally experiencing the problem, but the same thing happened.

After posting that the issue wasn't cleared up, I rebooted my system, and now things are working again, at least for now. I generally leave my PC running in power-saver mode overnight, so this was the first time I'd rebooted since the previous fix. This leads me to wonder if perhaps there's something going on with temporary files that are being flushed on restart, but I'm just shooting in the dark.

Edited to add: Also, this is happening in IE as well as Firefox, but not in Chrome, so I am dubious about it being a profile issue anyway.
