Firefox will not open Version 4.01 (tried to download new version), on MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. Safari and Chrom both work OK

I cannot get on-line with Firefox. It simply will not open any page. I'm told it cannot make a connection. And yet both Safari and Chrome work fine, hence it is not a connection problem.

Moreover, when I started with Chrome, it offered me the option to export bookmarks, but only from Safari. Firefox never appeared in the import box

I was using Firefox 4.01. I tried to download the new version, dragged it to Applications, but 4.01 remains in situ. I work on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8
