Keep getting older version dialogue

more options

I have had problems all week with firefox, it will work, then next time, say 10 minutes later I get dialogue box telling me I have opened older version and need to create a new profile, In the last 4 days I have done this 48 times, getting pissed off, got company IT to look into but no joy there, but by chance have just spotted a file, in moz maint service/logd, where it appears there was a mait service install just before I could not open, who has set this system up to update itself, but not update the shortcut file, so twice today twice yesterday and 8 times on tuesday to stop me using the service.

Hi garry59coa, I don't think you should get a message about opening a profile using an older version after startup. Once you start up successfully and during normal browsing, that message wouldn't make any sense. And yes, it would be extremely frustrating.

Are any external links involved in this problem? By that I mean links in other applications (such as MS Office or Acrobat) that open a browser tab, or desktop shortcuts to web pages.

Is it possible that you have multiple versions of Firefox installed? Usually each update replaces the earlier one, but there could be situations in which Firefox gets installed in multiple locations. These are the most likely places to find Firefox, and you should only have one of them:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

There are a couple workarounds for "downgrading" a profile that Firefox doesn't want to use, but let's come back to that after learning more about the problem.
