since updating to firefox 39 html5 players don't work on some sites and don't work properly on youtube.

i have repeatedly had the problem of some new problem every single time i update firefox so i did not for several months. i updated recently to version 39 and html5 vids have not been working at all on some sites, and won't go to proper full screen in youtube. i sove the problem in youtube with an add on that disables html5 on you tube and forces it to play in flashplayer, but that does not work with other sites.

i'm a heartbeat away from going to chrome after being a loyal mozilla user since the windows 3.1 days. i don't WANT to go to microsoft or google but i also am not willing to spend any more of my ever shortening life chasing down problems in every single update. the second biggest reason I use firefox is the add ons. without them i won't use this browser, so don't be telling me to jump through hoops while you blame an add on for the problem.

the problem was immediate after updating to 39. the update IS the problem. if i could go back to an earlier version I would.

On sites where HTML5 videos do not work, what symptoms do you get:

  • empty black rectangle
  • error message in the rectangle -- what is the message?
  • audio without video
  • other

Could you give an example URL or two where the player doesn't work?

Sometimes blocked streams can result from settings changes, for example:

  • blocked cookies
  • blocked third party cookies
  • blocked referrer header
  • disabled Media Foundation
  • disabled DirectShow
  • disabled DOM storage

The first two appear in the Options page under Privacy. The other four would have to have been changed through about:config, an add-on, or a user.js file.

Regarding add-ons, occasionally a clumsy ad blocker will prevent video from playing, but those issues usually can be addressed with an update to the extension/filter list or a site-specific exception.

Does any of this seem relevant so far?

privacy concerns keep me from giving the url of the site that still doesn't work but on that one their logo that gives percentages as a vid uploads hangs at 99%. I've tried getting help from the site, for months. My conclusion is they paid an outside vendor to design the player and then they weren't trained on how it works or how to troubleshoot it. Nobody in their support staff knows more about software than I do. Had me jumping through meaningless hoops.

i have now even refreshed firefox. it did not help.

the other things

    blocked cookies
   blocked third party cookies

You can't be seriously telling me that if I wan't firefox to work right I can't block at least 3rd party cookies.

the other things below are not things I would have ever changed, unless it was someone else telling me it would fix my problem. I do remember others recommending some about:config changes, which I did and they had no effect on anything. plus, like I said I've done a refresh that did not help.

   blocked referrer header
   disabled Media Foundation
   disabled DirectShow
   disabled DOM storage

BTW... it works just fine in Chrome but having Chrome and Firefox open at the same time is like asking for a showdown over which can suck up more of your resources.

If you right-click the player, do you get the full Firefox context menu for HTML5 videos? It would contain items such as Pause and Save Video As. If you don't have a video-specific menu, there might be a problem with the design of the progress meter, or the site's failure to remove it.

Did you check the Web Console (Firefox menu button or Tools > Web Developer) for error messages?

Note that some players display the media content in an iframe and in such a case the Full Screen button will only work if the outermost iframe has a allowfullscreen="true" attribute.

You can check that in the Inspector via the right-click context menu (Inspect Element).

Sorry, I missed the word "uploads" on the first reading. Inability to complete uploading, or failure to redirect when uploading is complete, probably is a completely different issue from the video playback issue.
