Hello. Yesterday I updated my Firefox, and it did not import my bookmarks. I saved them as a JSON file. In the restore menu it does pull up all the previous restore points, but when I try to restore/import any of them, the browser freezes and I get a message similar to the one I'm attaching. I have tried everything I read to do in the forums...deleting the places.sqlite file, adding the Places Maintenance & Auto-Sort Bookmarks. I've tried a System Restore to revert to my older version (which works, but the bookmarks are gone now and the problem persists)....nothing is fixing the problem and I am very sad to lose my several years' worth of bookmarks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Or if you have a *ton* of bookmarks - have you tried just hitting 'Continue' whenever it pops up? Maybe your computer needs some time to chew through the data.

Many times when I get that error message, my computer just needs another minute or two to think about whatever it's trying to do.

The JSON file probably did not save correctly or is otherwise corrupted.

Try opening the JSON file with a text editor - if nothing else, you could get them back by manually finding the URLs and bookmarking them again. Search for all instances of 'http' in the JSON file and you should find all your URLs.

If you backed them up as a .json file, you should be able to restore them from the bookmarks window by using "Backup and Restore". Just browse to where you put the .json file.

@Carbohydrates - that's what it was...thank you! I do have years and years worth of bookmarks (which is why I was so sad that they weren't loading!) I kept getting that script message over and over and it wasn't working, but I tried what you said and just kept hitting "continue" until it didn't show up again and now they are back. Thank you SO MUCH. You are a hero!

What is the file size of the JSON backup?

Note that such issues can be a problem with the places.sqlite file, so make sure to rule out such issues first.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Thank you - it was a big file (because I've been using Firefox a long, long time!) - about 8MB. It wasn't the JSON file (there were several other previous ones on my computer as well that were showing up, but also wouldn't load). The browser was freezing up when trying to load and showing the error, but when I just kept hitting "continue" running the script until it stopped showing the error, all my bookmarks were back. :) I also learned the importance of not just backing up to JSON. I will be exporting to HTML regularly now, just in case. :)
