Did that download finish or was Firefox still downloading the file?
When you close all Private Browsing mode windows then downloads are canceled and all data from the PB session is purged from memory, so you can no longer restart or resume a download or find history about it. That is how Private Browsing mode works and you can run into such problems if you forget to check if all downloads have finished.

Is this about the files that show in the Downloads Manager (about:downloads as used in PB mode) or are the files on the hard drive gone as well?
The files are always removed from the DM window, but you should still have the files on the hard drive. If they are gone there as well then this might be a setting in DTA if you were using that extension.
