Why does Thunderbird want to download 155,459 message headers?

Each time I bring up my e-mail program I'm asked if I want to download over 155 thousand new message headers. Where did they all come from? How do I stop this window from coming up?

Perhaps you tell us? :) See alt | tools | activity manager Is it a gmail account? If not, what provider?
