Problems with outlook.com emails. NotAuthenticatedServerError

Error box says:

The current operation on 'inbox' did not succeed. The mail server for account xxxx@outlook.com responded: Select Command is not permitted in current state (NotAuthenticatedServerError)

It's been working fine for ages and nothing has changed but now sometimes it connects other times I get the error. It has also deleted all inbox contents and then suddenly they will reappear.

I've removed the account and added it again but not solved the issue.

Any help to solve this will be much appreciated.

You do know what not authenticated means I hope. Thunderbird is not logged into the server. But apparently it thinks it is. This would indicate a third party program is messing with connectivity. The most common of those are anti virus programs. Try disabling any email scanner and see if that helps.
