Keyboard shortcuts with single letter keys can produce unexpected results. Why without function keys?
Sometimes I begin typing a reply, or entering a search keyword without paying much attention where the window focus is. If it is on the messaged pane, some keystrokes may correspond to a single-letter shortcuts, messing up the inbox without noticing this immediately (e.g. archiving a message). This is very inconvenient.
Why to allow shortcuts without function keys?
Chosen solution
Because old-time pre-GUI users love keyboard shortcuts. They are efficient.
Look at the keyconfig extension if you want to disable or modify keyboard shortcuts.
