Thunderbird is 'Downloading to Inbox', but which inbox and how do I stop it? Each email is causing TB to become "Not Responding"

I use Thunderbird because I have a couple of personal email addresses, and several work email addresses. At the bottom of the screen it currently shows- Downloading 17 of 794 to inbox. when this problem started the total was 2300. It now only says 794 because I have restarted it and that is what is left. I have been watching these emails download all day, but I don't know which inbox they are related to, where they are downloading to, and I also don't know why each one causes Thunderbird to stop responding. Each one is taking 10-30 seconds to come in, and I can't compose any emails while it is doing this. It freezes up for about 20 seconds and the window dulls. I have tried compacting my inboxes, but it doesn't seem to help. HELP!

re: I also don't know why each one causes Thunderbird to stop responding.

Sounds like you have an anti-virus program set to scan each incoming mail. Switch off email scanning and test. If you are using McAfee then please read: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee

  • Check : 'Tools ' > 'Activity Manager'

I disabled the McAfee add-on (which I never enabled.... I can't stand these anti-virus company bully tactics). But the thing about Tools- Activity Manager....? I don't know which tool menu you have, but mine doesn't give me that option. In the end, the only thing I could do was wait until it had finished (and wasted a whole day of work) because even trying to look at any menus or anything was held up by the "Not Responding". Thanks for the response, though

Alt+T will display the correct tool menu.

WRT McAfee, you may also need to change the scanning to programs and documents only or exclude attachment scanning. Depending on which build you have.

Regarding toolbar:

More recent versions of Thunderbird do not auto show the toolbars by default. The developers decided to create a menu icon (3 bar icon). Unfortunately, they also moved or slightly renamed some of the options and some tools require the correct toolbar enabled. This change did not take into consideration that virtually all help refers to the toolbars.

You can enable all the toolbars to make life easier. 3 bar menu icon > Options > select all the toolbars.
