does anyone know how to prevent ask.com from being the default search engine for keywords entered directly into the location bar?

I know how to make the necessary change on the "about:config" page, but it always reverts back to ask.com after an hour or so. ask.com is a TERRIBLE search engine, so I'd like to get a fix for this ASAP. Thanks!
