MozillaVPN consuming 500% CPU on Linux while not active

more options

I just subscribed to MozillaVPN and installed the client (version 2.3.3) on my Ubuntu 20.04 Linux system. The client seems to work fine; I was using it earlier today. However, right now it is in a disconnected ("off") state. Yet 'top' on my system shows the command "mozillavpn" consuming about 550% of my CPU. I assume this is not normal. What should I be looking at to address this issue?

Thanks, Peter

Just a quick follow up... I discovered that when I close the GUI window for MozillaVPN, the high CPU usage disappears. If I then reopen it (for example, by selecting "Show Mozilla VPN" on the menu associated with the icon), the high CPU usage returns. So the high CPU usage is in some way related to the GUI window.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for reaching out and I'm so sorry to hear you have been having issues with the VPN's CPU usage.

Today we will be releasing the new Mozilla VPN version 2.4. Updating your VPN version could resolve your issue. Update it by signing out (you can do this by going to the gear icon on the top right of the application, then scrolling down to "Sign out"), uninstalling it, re-downloading it from vpn.mozilla.org, and reinstalling it.

Let me know if that helps,

Hello! Thanks for that upgrade, it definitely helped but it didn't completely remove the issue. Now the behavior is as follows:

While the VPN is connected *and* the GUI is on screen, the CPU usage as reported by 'top' is about 300% continuously. If I close the GUI and stay connected *or* if I disconnect the VPN (even with the GUI on screen), the CPU usage drops steeply. So it seems like there is still an issue with the GUI, except that now it is only manifest when the VPN is connected instead of all the time as before.

I'm now using version 2.4.1
