Chosen solution

This may count as solving my problem. I decided to uninstall the rogue Firefox program and download and reinstall the same version (number 8). I used Windows XP Add Remove program which asked if I wanted to save the Firefox settings before I uninstalled Firefox. I said yes and carried on with the uninstall. I could not find a Firefox 8 so I went for version 12 and installed it on the laptop. This version 12 is now running with all the passwords an bookmarks from the uninstalled version 8. Thanks for all of your help and advice.

I would first update to Firefox 12 to make sure you get all the most recent bug fixes, security updates, etc.

Then, you can read Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles, which should help with making a complete or partial back up of your profile.

You can use the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups and copy that file to the other computer to restore the bookmarks.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File

Note that restoring a JSON backup will replace all the bookmarks that you currently have with the bookmarks in the JSON backup.

Not working in what means, will not open or just will not work on the internet....

I seen in one of the other forum links about being able to get old info before updating.....look around and see if you can find.....I will also, and if do post it back here know it was something to do with going c: programfiles/mozilla ...???? but forgot the rest.....off and looking for it

and the other reply in same link was if know what the older FF

was go to search and type in " firefox older download versions " and find the one you have and just re-install it then be able to get your bookmarks back.....before updating

But see if can find that other part for you

Firefox message says that it has crashed and is trying to restore the tabs. It will not go further and run. It gives the choice of quitting or restarting. Restarting just comes back to the same message and the only choice is quitting. It does the same in safe-mode. I want to save the bookmarks before uninstalling a reinstalling Firefox.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

If you read Locate your profile folder, you can find your profile folder. Simply copy and paste that to somewhere you can find it again, and read Recovering important data from an old profile to transfer it to a new profile :)
