I updated firefox today and now I cannot open it, every time I try it gives me the error message that firefox has crashed, and yes I also have attempted in safe mode, and the same thing still happens. I can't even get a firefox window to open.

Sorry to hear of the problems, possibly the most likely cause is

  • malware or
  • you are using IDvault (That software was causing IIRC 80 k crashes a week recently)

If you have IDvault consider disabling or uninstalling it, or updating it. (They are working on a fix).

Besides being in safe mode it will help to disable any plugins (Safe Mode does not disable plugins)

To check for malware you must use up-to-date malware/security scanning software, or sites, and it is probably a good idea to try multiple sites/software.

Crashes may be confirmed by your OS even if firefox crashes before you can use about:crashes

Are you able to obtain crash IDs or crash signatures for your crashes ?

I am not able to get crash ID's, my brower window will not even open, so I cannot follow the steps to find out my ID's.

Oh and also I do not have IDvault

Do you have Comcast Constant Guard ? as that has IDvault.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports Windows 7/Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\

You can find the crash reports manually in .txt files a submit folder. Make sure you can view hidden folders/files.

Post a few of the recent crash reports and if you want to see for yourself then then copy+paste the report numbers at http://crash-stats.mozilla.com in above right search box there.

I also ran multiple spyware and malware scans and there's nothing there. and I do not have the comcast thing either.

Are you able to make a copy of the error message you get when it crashes, and post that in a message ?

Did you try looking for the crash information that will be on your computer ?

From the linked article above you may note that the files should be in:

  • (Windows 7/Vista:)
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\
  • were you able to navigate to that location ok and open the files, remembering that the files may be hidden
