Does MF do security scans at random and then request you download a file to erase the threats?

Firefox will warn you if you go to a phishing site, but it won't do what you appear to be seeing.

It sounds like you have malware of some kind installed. I suggest you download the free version of Malwarebytes from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free and run a full system scan to eliminate that as the culprit.

I had a pop up window today... looked like a real Firefox window. Said I had trojans and other threats in 97 files. Another window popped up asking to download Mozilla Security something or other to erase the threats. I shut the windows and came looking to see if the messages were ligit, and found these posts. I went to Cnet and downloaded Malwarebites... just incase the above post was fraudulent.. did a complete scan.. over 59 minutes. No threats were detected. At the time I got the supposed Mozilla warning, I was google searching ASCII images for text pictures. Glad I didn't believe the warning... but it really did look like a Mozilla message.

Firefox is a web browser only as it does not have any scanner builtin in any version of Firefox for Windows, Mac OSX or Linux.

foxed57, it sounds like you encounter one of those Windows XP themed page with a fake animated scanner that then claims you are infected and then suggests you download a .exe in what will do the actual infection.

The Firefox browser nor Mozilla would never serve such a message and download.
