How to reuse existing tabs (don't open additional tabs) in Firefox Preview?

Dear Mozilla community,

first: Firefox Preview for Android is a great product and I'm happily using it already (the most current version from Google Play, on Android 10).

But every time I open a bookmark from my library or an "important sites" (in German: "Wichtige Seiten", e.g. the links you can pin to the tab overview page) a new tab gets opened.

Is there any way to reuse the current tab for bookmarks, similar to the behavior of almost all other browsers - and not least the default behavior of the previous "classic" version of Firefox for Android? The only way seems to be to manually enter the URL, which is... suboptimal.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Hi benn0

I have had a look and I see what you mean. I have filed this issue for our developers to look into:

Hi Seburo,

unfortunately your link doesn't seem to work, and I can't find the issue on Github's fenix issue tracker. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks, b.

Hi benn0

I am very sorry about that, I am sure that I had the issue filed.

I have filed it under:

Thank you again for you support of Firefox Preview and what we are doing at Mozilla. For both the staff and us contributors it mean a lot.

So, it seems that this behaviour is considered as expected. That's unfortunate, as it is different from any other mobile browser I know...

We do continue to look at, work on and evolve our browsers over time, so this is something that may be looked at again in a future update.

It would be interesting to see some sort of explanation why it was done this way, and what's the rational behind it. May be there is a good reason, but then I don't know what that would be. It feels rather awkward to me. If this will still be the behavior when Fenix will replace the Firefox for Android release version I will switch to a different browser.
