Installed tb for a friend, installs just fine, but won't open. Just crashes when 'setup new email' window appears. Tried old version of TB - same issue.

I tried uninstalling, reboot, delete all appdata folders etc., but about 10 seconds after the window asking for email account opens, tb crashes with the following details.

That crash report looks like a Windows crash report and not the Thunderbird crash report.

Did you download Thunderbird from the following link choosing the language and suitable download for your OS? https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

If yes: Exit Thunderbird if running.

Make sure Thunderbird is an allowed program in the Firewall.

Access the profile name folder in Appdata. C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<Profile name>\ Delete the following files:

  • session.json
  • panacea.dat
  • foldertree.json
  • xulstore.json

Start Thunderbird.

Assuming all is ok so far.......... Help > Troubleshooting Information Scroll down to 'Crash Reports' section Copy paste the crash report number into this forum.

Thanks Toad-Hall - but - that is a copy and paste of the tb crash details, so I have no idea what is going on.

I can't start tb to get any other crash report as the first thing that tb wants to do is set up an email account (as tb has never been used before on my friend's PC) and that is the window that stays blank and then crashes. I have, on 3 attempts, started by totally deleting the profile in appdata etc.

The next time I am over at my friend's place, I will check the firewall settings etc. It is an older PC that originally had Windows 7, but my friend did the free upgrade to Windows 10. I have already suggested that the easiest fix might be to wipe it and start again, as 'upgraded' Win 10 seems to have more issues than clean load versions.

Also, next time I am at the friend's PC, I will try to get the crash report from the appdata folders instead.

you say it has just been installed, so lets try a complete removal of whatever profile has been setup and try again.

Windows key + R type %appdata% and press enter locate the thunderbird folder in the displayed appdata folder. Delete the Thunderbird folder.

This wil restart the whole setup as new. The program will be there, but no corrupt profile files or whatever, it will give thunderbird a chance to startup and move along.

You might also want to try windows safe mode with networking (usually requires a wired connection)

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates and other "security" software and password managers..

Thanks Matt... But I have uninstalled, deleted the full profile, rebooted, and reinstalled several times, including using an older version - but still crashes. I have tried tb in safe mode too, but haven't tried windows safe mode yet. I will try that next time I visit my friend.
