Firefox 58 so slow it becomes unusable

more options

I've updated to Firefox 58 yesterday and it has made my machine unusable. Tabs freeze, I can't scroll, I can't type (even while trying to type this question I have to stop every 5-10 seconds until it unfreezes)! I have already followed instructions from other posts, including checking the "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" box in the Permissions, and starting in safe mode with add-ons disabled. Nothing has helped! I still get the "A webpage is slowing down your browser" message every couple of seconds. Who on earth ok'd this update?? I have been unable to get any work done the whole day. Please advise on how to fix this. I am 1 stalled tab away from switching to Chrome.

Do you use Avast or AVG security software? For several days there has been a severe issue with their script filter that hopefully is fixed by now. This was the last word:

H folks, the Avast Viruslab team has found a potential problem in the code that synchronizes Javascript scanner with the main AV service. We have prepared a fix which is scheduled for release as a part of a regular virus DB update on Monday 19/2/2018. Similar fix will be released for AVG brand.

If you use either of those programs, could you trigger an update and see whether it helps?

Separate Security Issue: Update your Flash Player Note: Windows users should download the ActiveX for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the ActiveX.

Flash Player Version: Version 28.0.0.161

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ Direct link scans current system and browser Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, Win IE . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only> +++++++++++++++++++ See if there are updates for your graphics drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/upgrade-graphics-drivers-use-hardware-acceleration

Thanks jscher2000! It was AVG that was causing the unresponsiveness. Just updated and Firefox is back to normal!

Hi crisdeli, thanks for reporting back. Hopefully the other AVG users affected by this will update soon, too.
