I changed my gmail password and have followed directions for changing the password in Thunderbird but T-bird doesn't remember password (yes, I chekd box!)

I am using Thunderbird 52.6. What I do is: 1) Click Tools --> Options --> Security Tab

    Notes: The CHANGE MASTER PASSWORD button is inactive, (grayed out)
                 The only two passwords saved are for pop.gmail and smtp.gmail

2) Click the REMOVE ALL button and then clicking YES at the prompt for "Do you want to remove all passwords?"

3) Click the CLOSE button. 4) Click the OK button. 5) Close Thunderbird. 6) Open Thunderbird

    Notes:  The ENTER YOUR PASSWORD window appears

7) Enter my (new) password - the one I changed in my gmail account 8) Click the USE PASSWORD MANAGER TO REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD box 9) Click OK

   Notes:  Error message comes up "Sending of password for user jacobslinda109@gmail.com did not succeed. Mail server pop.gmail.com responded: Web login required: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754"

10) Click OK

       Note:  "Login to server pop.gmail.com failed." appears

After this I have hit the RETRY button and have also hit the ENTER NEW PASSWORD button and neither one makes a difference. I have tried this over and over . . . nothing.

SOLVED!! I got a suggestion to allow less secure apps to access my account. I did that and now Thunderbird is working. While I am happy about this, I'm not thrilled that my account is less secure . . . I'll have to decide what to do about that. Anyway, thanks for your help and I'm all set for now. Whew! What a pain in the butt!

Gmail authentication has become something of a pain. You may need to set up an "app specific password" in the Google site. I had to do this myself recently when test driving an alternative email app on my tablet.

Google do have a system that is easy to use, OAuth2, but this has been made available for IMAP and SMTP, but not POP. It's easy to forget the additional hurdles put in the way of POP users when all your own accounts use IMAP.

Thank you for answering. I don't have any "apps." I am just using my laptop, same as I always have. Is a laptop considered an app?

gmail shows that it recognizes my computer as an app https://screenshots.firefox.com/XpBG8QEgQyhG7ApV/myaccount.google.com BUT to give an app access to my google account, I must have a "G suite" account, and I don't have one/ don't want one.

This just gets more and more complicated. Any other suggestions?

SOLVED!! I got a suggestion to allow less secure apps to access my account. I did that and now Thunderbird is working. While I am happy about this, I'm not thrilled that my account is less secure . . . I'll have to decide what to do about that. Anyway, thanks for your help and I'm all set for now. Whew! What a pain in the butt!
