Chosen solution

You can toggle the History sidebar on/off via "View > Sidebar > History" or "Ctrl+H" (Command+H on Mac) There is also a History button in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list with a Show History Sidebar item.

Current Firefox releases have a "Show sidebars" button in the Customize palette.

  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize
  • View > Toolbars > Customize

Please see this support article - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites

The new Tab page isn't intended to be a text listing of recent browsing history, but rather a visualization of "top sites" that you visit based upon the number of visits over time. There is nothing built into Firefox to switch over to a text listing, and I am unaware of an add-on available to display a text list of recent browsing history, either.

This feature was there before I had to reinstall Firefox. You just had to click the little down arrow next to the refresh sign and it listed all the sites previously visited - NO thumbnails!
