What could cause firefox's tab's to close completely?

I have a user in my office who is reporting that Firefox is behaving strangely on his Microsoft Surface Pro 3. He claims that he's working between several tabs in Firefox, then he'll click away from Firefox and go into Outlook for example. When he returns to Firefox, he claims that all the tabs are closed. He says most of the time the browser shows up as blank, while once it had a single tab open.

I'm having a real hard time determining what is going on and I'm definitely not ruling out user error as he is an older and not tech-savy guy. Is there something in Firefox that would close all tabs, but still keep it open? Or close all but one tab? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Well it's not possible for Firefox to open without at least 1 tab. It's possible that when he closes Firefox to go to another program he's doing just that, closing it when he means to minimize it. I'd have him sit down and walk you through all the things he is doing that could make this happen
