Firefox update (appx. 6/18/14, Win7) deleted my automatic logons for websites (banks, blogs).

This is not change in the behavior of websites. About 10 websites that I visit daily began asking me to enter my username and password. Immediately before the update, they were auto-filling and had been doing so for months and, in some cases, years. The behavior is now replicating itself on my Firefox synchronized laptop and an infrequently used workstation as Firefox updates.

Sounds that you lost the cookies that make those websites remember you.

This issue can be caused by corrupted cookies or cookies that are blocked.

  • check the permissions on the about:permissions page and in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"

In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":

  • do not clear the Cookies
  • do not clear the Site Preferences

Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

Clearing cookies will remove all specified (selected) cookies including cookies with an allow exception that you would like to keep.

This response ignores the fact that the Firefox cookie dB was recognizing all websites properly a few minutes before the update but failed immediately after I reopened the browser and was greeted by the occasional but familiar message that Firefox was updating and would me available momentarily.

Obviously, the first thing I did was check all of my settings to ensure that the update had not changed them. All are correct. This included checking my logon passwords where I found roughly 50% of them missing, for the first time ever in my use of Firefox. It gets more complicated than that. Some logons and passwords that were showing correctly in the cookie dB were nonetheless related to websites that were now requiring new logons for the first time since they had been set up months or years ago. The latter situation suggests a fairly deep bug in the upgrade.

I fail to understand a culture that tends to blame users for bad settings rather than attempt to investigate what seem like obvious bugs in Firefox upgrades.
